Word of Life Community Church 1

Word of Life Community Church is located in the middle of three large slums in Kampala, just next to the city’s largest cemetery. Being situated in a slum, it serves to meet the needs of the community and to spread the love of Christ among community dwellers. The church has 15 sister churches which are being led by the spiritual sons of this ministry. The philosophy of sharing the love of Christ through acts of service is a high value in all of these local churches.

Word of life Community Church began in 2001 when founding and senior pastor, Deo M. Mwanje, clearly received a vision from the Lord about this slum that was at that time rooted in witchcraft. A large cemetery in the centre of the slum negatively affected all who lived there. Pastor Deo felt a call from God to go and plant a church in the area in his vision which is called Kosovo. He and his family moved to a nearby neighbourhood and on June 1, 2001 he started the church with only three members. Like most beginnings, it was an exciting and scary time.

At that time this community had 163 shrines and people were in constant fear of the sorcery that was being practiced in the community. Child sacrifice was a rampant occurrence and the cemetery was used by the sorcerers as a breeding ground for witches.

Besides witchcraft and child sacrifice, the community was faced with the problem of rowdy and sometimes violent behavior by the youth, as most of the children were not attending school. Prostitution was very common among girls as young as 13 years of age and HIV/AIDS was claiming many in this community.

The church spent its initial years fighting witchcraft and sorcery and in the process many people gave their lives to Christ, including sorcerers and their family members. Over the years the church has initiated several projects in the community to better the lives of those living there. These include Treasured Kids School, which was started in 2004 to provide education for the children in the community, the Child Development Project, which has reached out to over 1000 children in the community with education, health and psychosocial support and most recently, the SACCO (local micro-financing bank) which focuses on transforming lives financially.

Word of Life Church has grown from three people to over 300 members and the community has been transformed, as attested to by changed lives as well as the following positive changes in the community: there are only 19 remaining shrines, far more children presently attend school, the violence in the youth has dropped to a low rate, child sacrifice is very rare and child prostitution has been greatly reduced.

The church has had its fair share of hard times but nonetheless, the Lord has been faithful to His people. In 2018, a new church building was erected right next to the school with the goal of being a community center for the citizens of Kosovo. The church has grown in number as well as matured in the ways of the Lord.

Today, we are writing a new chapter. Our community is growing in positive ways, our worship is blossoming, and our teaching is more relevant than it has ever been. We are excited about what the Lord has in store for Word of Life Community Church!

We love God by loving people and we serve God by serving People.

In essential beliefs – We have unity

“There is one body and one spirit…there is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father of us all.” – Ephesians 4:4.

In non-essential – We have liberty

“Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters. Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls…so then each of us will give an account of himself to God…so whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God.” – Romans 14:1, 4, 12, 22.

In all our beliefs – We show charity

“If I hold in my mind not only all human knowledge but also the very secrets of God, and if I have the faith that can move mountains but have no love, I amount to nothing at all.” 1 Corinthians 13:2.
